Pitch & Harmony
Drone
A sustained reference note used for pitch and tonal-centre work.
In plain English
A drone gives the ear a steady pitch to compare against. Musicians can play scales, long notes, melodies, or difficult phrases over the drone and listen for what feels settled or tense.
Try or listen for this
Play a D drone, then slowly practise a D major scale while listening for which notes blend and which notes pull away.
Why it matters
Drone practice strengthens pitch awareness, intonation, tone control, and the feeling of a tonal centre.
