Pitch & Harmony

Modes

Scales with distinct interval patterns and tonal centres.

In plain English

The common modes use the same kinds of notes as major scales but organise them around different starting points and interval patterns. Each creates a different harmonic colour.

Try or listen for this

Play only the white notes from D to D. Heard with D as the home note, this creates the Dorian mode.

Why it matters

Modes help musicians understand tonal colour, improvise over particular chords, and recognise sounds that major and minor alone do not fully describe.
